The Mumbai police, in the wake of 1993 serial blasts convict Yakub Memon's execution on July 30, has put the city on alert. Police commissioner Rakesh Maria, in a meeting with all additional commissioners of police and deputy commissioners of police, instructed the vigil in the city be increased to ensure that no untoward incident takes place.

According to police sources, the force, till July 30, will be keeping a close eye on the city. Officers have been told to increase nakabandis, apart from collecting intelligence. "We were already on alert for Ramzaan and Eid. Now, we have been told to be on alert as the execution is coming up," said a senior IPS officer, on condition of anonymity. "We are being cautious as there can be retaliation before or after Memon's hanging."

The police recently carried out a security audit of all vital installations in the city and are likely to beef up security there as well. "The vital installations are generally targeted; hence, we will be increasing security in those places. Even places witnessing high footfalls will be closely monitored," said the officer.
