Mumbai cops not to tolerate security cameras' prying eyes

The department has swung into action and is planning to instruct malls, stores and outlets to take proper steps to ensure similar incidents do not occur in the city.

What is the city police actionplan?
Instructions will be issued to all local police stations to conduct regular checks on stores and also take immediate action if any complaint is filed. Senior police inspectors will be instructed to visit outlets that have changing rooms for ladies and brief the managers on the steps needed to be taken. Police might also carry out surprise checks on such outlets.

Has the law on voyeurism enough teeth?
After the Nirbhaya case, the rape law was amended and voyeurism was included as a punishable offence with imprisonment upto seven years. "Whatever steps are required will be initiated without fail," Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Dhananjay Kulkarni told dna.

What is the response of trader community?
The Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association (FRTWA) has urged all the garment shops in the city to ensure that changing rooms are checked by the owners themselves and recommend police action against staff indulging in prying activities, said its president Viren Shah.

Dec, 2013: Orthopedic surgeon Yash Shah of Masina hospital held for allegedly filming two of his colleagues in hostel bathroom.
Oct, 2014: Resident doctor Vipul Chaudhary of Sion hospital arrested on similar charges.
Jan, 2015: Vakola police arrest a 17-year-old boy for allegedly filming his 13-year-old neighbour in her bath and circulating it on Whatsapp.
Feb, 2015: Oshiwara police arrest an employee of a posh hotel for allegedly filming a female guest by fixing a mobile phone inside the ladies washroom.
