The Shivaji Park police have arrested a man for allegedly murdering his friend with a paver block at Dadar chowpatty on May 10.

According to the police, on may 10, they had received information that a seriously injured man was lying in a pool of blood behind the Mayor's bungalow. The police immediately went to the spot and rushed the man to a hospital where he was declared dead on admission.

"On the basis of the tailor's brand on his shirt and with his photo, we traced the residence of the deceased to Worli, where his father identified him as Ravi Narayan Madelu," said an officer from Shivaji Park police station. "During investigation, we came to know that some of Mandelu's friends worked at a coffee shop near Worli," he added.

The police later questioned two of Mandelu's friends — Rajkumar Chaudhary and Mahesh Yadav — who told them that on May 9 evening, Mandelu had met them outside the coffee shop. The police also came to know that on the same night, around 10:30pm, Mandelu and Chaudhary went out together from the coffee shop and later consumed alcohol at the Shivaji Park maidan and Dadar chowpatty.

"We later interrogated one of Mandelu's close friend who told us that the deceased used to work at eatery in a Mall in Kharghar. When we made inquiries, we came to know that on May 9, around 6pm, Mandelu had handed over the cash that was collected to the manager and left the place. When we realised that Mandelu was last spotted with Chaudhary, we took him into our custody. After sustained interrogation, he confessed to his crime."

Chaudhary told the police that on May 9, after getting drunk, they went to chowpatty where he assaulted the deceased with a paver block and ran away with Mandelu's mobile and the cash he had found on him. "We have arrested Chauadhry and booked him for murder. He was produced before the court which remanded him in police custody till May 18," said an officer.
