The long-pending project of Wastewater Treatment Facility (WwTF) is finally set to take off. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken a step ahead and has appointed a consultant for the Worli, Dharavi and Bandra plants. Under phase two of the Mumbai Sewage Disposal Project (MSDP II), the BMC will upgrade the secondary and tertiary treatment plant at eight locations.

The city gets 3,800 million litres water a day (MLD). As per official records, 2,100 MLD water goes to the sea as sewerage water. The BMC had decided to start water treatment plants back in 2007.

The city's sewerage system includes 44 satellite pumping stations and seven WwTF with preliminary treatment facility. The treated effluent is discharged into the creek. The city has preliminary treatment plants at Worli, Ghatkopar, Dharavi, Bhandup, Versova, Colaba, Bandra and Malad.

Water treatment can not only prevent pollution in the sea but can also generate water which can be used for various industrial purposes and for gardening as well. But the plant has to be a tertiary treatment facility. It took 10 long years to start developing the secondary and tertiary treatment plants, which allow non-drinking usage of water.

Now, the civic body will float a tender and proposals to appoint a Project Management Consultant after discussing the same in the Standing Committee Meeting, on Tuesday.

"These plants will have upgraded techniques and we need experts for evaluation as well as to look after civil, mechanical work. The consultant will look after project management," said a BMC official.

According to the proposals, the civic body will appoint a consultant for Bandra, Dharavi, and Worli. The environment clearances from the Central Environment Ministry have come following certain conditions. Ghatkopar, Bhandup, Versova plants are in still in the planning stage. The civic body will upgrade the Bandra plant with a viewing gallery and a rooftop garden. Meanwhile, the upgrade work of Colaba plant is underway.
