Mumbai is two days into the monsoon, and it is only going to shower more. Weatherman's reports suggest that it will only be practical for Mumbaikars to don their raincoats or arm themselves with umbrellas while stepping out of homes from Monday onwards.

The monsoon, which started on a feeble note recording a meagre 12.6 mm in Colaba and 11.6 mm in Santacruz on June 12, has gained much vigour in the last two days. On Sunday, in less than nine hours, it rained over double than what the city received in 24 hours on June 13. Colaba recorded a rainfall of 84 mm and Santacruz 40.6 mm. A day earlier, on June 13, Colaba had recorded 29.9 mm rainfall and Santacruz 22.7 mm.

City's meteorological department had predicted that the monsoon will arrive on June 10. The onset, however, was delayed by two days. With monsoon finally setting in, the temperature has dropped to below 30 degree Celsius, providing the parched city the much needed relief and respite.

In the next 48 hours, a few spells of showers are expected throughout Mumbai, according to the forecast advisory issued by the Met department. While the maximum temperature will hover around 28 degree Celsius, the minimum will drop to 25 degree Celsius. The temperatures on Sunday plummeted significantly, compared to first week in June. Before the onset of monsoon, it was soaring over 35 degrees Celsius. "On June 7, before the arrival of monsoon, the maximum temperature had soared to up to 36.8 degree Celsius," said a met official.

Following showers on Sunday, there was flooding in Null Bazaar area of South Mumbai, Ghatkopar East, Santacruz East, Borivali East, Hindmata area in Parel and Wadala East.

Up to 40 trees were uprooted across the city in a single day – 14 in South Mumbai, 7 in Eastern Suburbs and 20 in Western Suburbs. In one of the incidents at Mahalaxmi, two persons were injured after an uprooted tree fell on them. They sustained minor injuries and have been admitted to BMC-run Nair Hospital for treatment.
