Bids to construct maze of flyovers at Kalanagar junction have finally been floated. Earlier this month, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) initiated the process to invite tenders from the private construction firms to have a flyover as part of first phase. "The entire Kalanagar remodelling project will be implemented in a phased manner. In the first phase, for which bids have been floated, flyover between Dharavi-end towards Western Express Highway will be constructed," said an MMRDA official. The estimated cost for this elevated structure is Rs153.70 crore.

The overall proposal is to have three flyovers with an extension to one of the bridges and create a new road. The other components of the project will be implemented in the next phase. There will be a flyover each to reach the Bandra-Worli Sea Link from Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and to the business district from the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The total length of these two two-lane flyovers will be 1,888m. The flyover coming from Dharavi to Vakola on Western Express Highway (WEH) will have an arm that will merge the traffic coming from the BKC towards Vakola on Western Express Highway. This bridge will be at the second level or above the existing Kalanagar Junction flyover. This a three-lane road will be 2,920m long.

Another component of the project will be to have a 12-feet wide road through the government land, where Public Works Department (PWD) and Excise Department have their barracks. This road will cater to traffic coming from Dharavi-end and headed towards Bandra Worli Sea Link or Mahim. Office spaces of the PWD will be relocated to Wadala, whereas the excise department office will be moved to a new building at the same site.
On an average 12,000 cars pass the Kalanagar Junction every hour and with each passing day the number is bound to increase. The MMRDA officials are planning the project to decongest the Kalanagar Junction as this is one of the crucial locations to head Eastern or Western side of Mumbai or even towards south Mumbai.

However, transport activists are of the opinion that there are cheaper solutions available to decongest Kalanagar Junction and there isn't need to spend an estimated Rs227 crore for this project. They are of the opinion that having more flyovers do not solve traffic congestion problem but only promote private vehicle ownership and shift congested locations to some other traffic junctions. The work is scheduled to be awarded on February 3 next year. Once awarded, the time frame to finish this massive and complicated project is 30 months, which is July-August 2018.
