You will soon be able to charge electric vehicles at the city airport with the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) initiating the process of installing electric charging stations in the parking areas at both the terminals. Other than for the general public, the charging stations will also be installed air-side to cater to vehicles of ground handling agencies and airlines.

MIAL is in the process of appointing an operator for the facility. It has floated an expression of interest (EOI) inviting companies to be the concessionaire to build and run the charging stations. The EOI reads, "Install, operate, maintain and manage the charging stations for electric vehicles at multilevel car parks at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA), Mumbai, for use of general public and people working at airport and parking their electric vehicles."

An official from the airport, the nation's second busiest, said, "Installation will be done as per the civil aviation guidelines and it will be part of the current operation and maintenance contract."

The state and central governments have been promoting electric vehicles. Recently, the state said that e-vehicles will be used by government officials for travel within city limits, and a pilot project was also launched.

The state also plans to have charging stations on country's first Expressway between Mumbai and Pune.

The Central government aims at having 30 per cent of the total vehicles in country running on electricity by 2030 considering it is environment friendly. The Mumbai airport is the second busiest airport in the country and carried around 48 million passengers in the last fiscal.

It has already reached its saturation point of handling increasing passengers traffic that has increased more than 100 per cent in the last 12 years. The Navi Mumbai International Airport for which pre development activity is currently ongoing is said to give relief to Mumbai airport's increasing traffic.
