Three men, who were allegedly involved in killing the wife of one of their acquaintances with his involvement, have been detained by the crime branch of the Mumbai police.

The trio was detained after their accomplice, Santosh Rajput, 25, confessed that he, along with the three aides, killed his wife in August. Rajput, said the police, has confessed to dumping her body at Malshej Ghat in Thane district.

A crime branch officer said that his team, along with the officers of the local police station in Thane, had searched around Malshej Ghat in Thane district along with trekkers but as of now the body has not recovered. “The local police are still at their best with the help of the local villagers and trekkers,” said the officer.

The crime branch officials said they immediately alerted the local police station in Thane rural area which has jurisdiction over the locality where the woman’s body had been dumped. Rajput, said the police, had been arrested from Powai area for being in possession of a countrymade revolver. Rajput, who has been remanded in police custody till December 3, will be handed over to officials of Tekaure police station in Thane district in connection with the investigation of his wife’s murder.

During investigation, we learnt that Rajput was involved in several robbery cases. Rajput  told the police that after he was arrested in a robbery case, his wife, Divya, 23, went to her parents’ home in Vashi with their three-month-old child. She was upset about his criminal past, said the police, adding that her decision to move to her parents’ home angered him. When he was out of jail, he went to Vashi and got her home, said the officer.

“Rajput, with his three aides, hatched a plan. They drove her in a car at isolated place where they killed her and dumped her body at Malshej Ghat,” said the officer, adding that Divya’s parents were unaware of her death.

“After Rajput’s confession, we visited her parents and they were  shocked to hear the news. They were under the impression that Divya was very much at her husband’s home. She had not contacted them after she had gone with her husband” said deputy commissioner of police, Ambadas Pote.

“We have been questioning Rajput’s three associates and after Rajput’s remand we will hand over him to local police station in Thane district for further investigation,” said Pote, adding that Divya’s body has not yet been recovered.
