A 23-year-old woman was allegedly raped by an acquaintance in Goregaon West on Thursday. The accused, a history sheeter, is on the run.

According to the police, the woman's husband and the accused were friends. They met while both were in jail in two separate cases of rape. The two were out on bail when the incident took place. They often used to visit each other's place, said the police.

The accused, Mohammed Ali Khan, 38, called the woman to his residence saying he'd help her in getting some job and allegedly raped her.

Uttam Khermode, ACP, Goregaon division, said: "The three of them were friends. The woman was looking for a job and the accused offered to help her, and called her to his house and allegedly sexually assaulted her."

During interrogations, it was found that the couple had borrowed some money from Khan, which they failed to return, and that had angered Khan.

The incident took place around 4:30pm in Tilak Nagar area. The accused was staying as a paying guest in a Mhada building. The victim also lives in the same area with her husband. She managed to flee from Khan's house and approached the police. He fled from his residence after the incident.

The Goregaon police have registered a case of rape under section 376 of the IPC. "We have deployed a team to nab the accused. We are awaiting the woman's medical reports," said Khermode.
