The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has readied 120 municipal school buildings across the city's 24 wards as emergency assembly points for people who might get stranded during monsoon.

Citizens can take immediate shelter at these schools in case of a landslide, cloudburst, building collapse or any other such rain-related eventuality.

The decision was taken during Saturday's monthly meeting of civic chief Ajoy Mehta and senior civic officials.

As per the BMC's plan, five schools in each ward will be kept as emergency shelters. "If there is a landslide, residents have to be moved to a safer place where they can be accommodated. We have already identified schools, mostly near flood-prone spots, and similar places to shift residents during emergency," said an official from BMC.

These premises will also be equipped with basic facilities such as toilets.

The corporation will also put up information boards outside the schools which will proclaim them as emergency shelters.

These boards will also carry details like dos and don'ts during an emergency situation, contact numbers of disaster management officials, civic officials, the police and fire brigade, and the address of other shelters.

"We will inform the people what to do and not do in such situations," said the official, citing an example. "Sometimes, people stand atop the debris of landslides or collapsed buildings to take photographs, which is dangerous for everyone trapped. They'll be advised not to do that."
