Mumbai: 110 local trains cancelled as it poured pitchfork

There was waterlogging at specific locations on both CR and WR which delayed over 250 services as trains were late by 20-25 minutes on an average.

The local trains crawled but did not stop even though it rained heavily and continuously. On July 9, the Central and Western Railway together cancelled close to 110 services, barely 3 per cent, of the 3,087 services that are operated daily. There was waterlogging at specific locations on both CR and WR which delayed over 250 services as trains were late by 20-25 minutes on an average.

During the day - between 8.30am and 5.30pm - Colaba weather station recorded 104.8mm of rains while Santacruz recorded 75.9mm of rainfall; not to forget the continuous rainfall the night before which had caused trouble to rail commuters and motorists alike. 

There was waterlogging at Nallasopara on WR, while at Thane, Kalwa, Kurla and Sion on CR. The general manager of CR DK Sharma, visited Thane which was affected by rains. Plus a wall collapsed at Sandhurst station at around 10am. 

This led to diversion and cancellation of trains on the slow line. This was rectified after debris were removed after 45 minutes or so. Sources said that this is the same spot where wall collapsed couple of years back due to unwarranted construction there and water leakage.

The WR also cancelled four services of AC local due to heavy rains. On the western line, there was severe water logging at Nallasopara.
