After missing four deadlines and a series of glitches caused by its blanket implementation of the new on screen evaluation method, the University of Mumbai is yet to announce results of over 70,000 students.

While the answer sheets of 58, 099 students are yet to be evaluated, university officials revealed that answer sheets of 28,498 students are yet to be traced. Close to 4.92 lakh students appeared for various examinations in 2017.

A major chunk - over 32,000 answer sheets - yet to be evaluated are from Commerce stream and some courses under distance education.

"Some answer sheets have been mixed with those of other subjects and hence are untraceable. However, these answer sheets are very much there with the university and are being physically located," said acting Director of Board of Examinations and Evaluation, Arjun Ghatule

At a press conference on Monday, university officials informed that results of eight subjects were yet to be declared. Speaking about cases where students were shown 'absent' or marked zero, Ghatule attributed it to technical errors in the system.

"Students whose results were held in reserve were wrongly coded into the system thus leading to a misunderstanding that these students have been marked absent or failed. We are declaring incremental results of such students gradually," he said.

After the unprecedented crisis, the university had to evaluate manually 26,500 papers largely belonging to the engineering stream. A total of 64,604 papers were evaluated by various sub-centres at Pune, Kolhapur, Aurangabad, etc.

With the delay in declaring results, the university is mulling to ensure some buffer seats so students whose results are not declared yet would not miss on admissions.

The university's help desk has so far dealt with over 8,500 grievances over results and issued confidential results for 2,630 students.
