The State Human Rights Commission has sent a notice to the civic-run Nair Hospital after the mishap in the hospital's MRI room that killed one last month. Speaking to DNA, Bhagwantrao More, Chairperson (additional charge) of State Human Rights Commission said, "We have sent the notice and the hospital will submit its report about the incident. After studying the report, the commission will decide what action is to be taken".

In the freak accident that took place at Nair Hospital on January 27, Rajesh Maru (32) was sucked into the MRI machine as he entered the room holding an oxygen cylinder in his hands. The powerful magnetic force of the MRI machine attracted the heavy cylinder thus sucking in Maru with it. Maru was accompanying an ailing relative who was to undergo MRI scanning.

Ever since the incident the MRI section of the hospital has been closed for operations and an inquiry is being carried out by Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Health), Sunil Dhamane.

In its inquiry, the BMC sought details to understand whose negligence was to blame for the mishap and how a relative was allowed to carry a cylinder to the MRI room in the first place. The civic body also investigated whether the metal detector of the MRI section was working and who from the hospital's staff was present when the mishap took place.

Immediately after the incident, an FIR was lodged by Maru's relatives in Agripada police station against the hospital's authorities for negligence. The Agripada police have arrested two resident doctors of Nair hospital, a ward boy and a helper under IPC section 304 (culpable homicide).
