The deadline to complete Monorail work between Wadala depot and Jacob Circle has been revised for the 13th time, with the latest deadline being December 2016.
Sources said though a major portion of civil construction was done by Larsen and Toubro, a lot of work still needs to be completed. "A lot of station building work is done, but finishing works are pending, including signalling and electrification," said an official.
It is not just the installation of systems that is pending. Even the five monorail trains are yet to arrive from Malaysia to Mumbai. Once they reach Mumbai and if the guideway beam, on which the monorail runs, is ready with the systems, it will take at least a couple of months for various types of trials and tests.

The first-ever deadline for the project, set by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) officials, was March 2010. Sources said that despite the fact that work was far from over, the MMRDA authorities set ambitious and impractical deadlines.
An MMRDA official said, "We have to set deadlines to push the contractor towards finishing the project. Else, it will keep on dragging, even though we have penalty clauses in the contract."
