Doctors at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General (LTMG) Hospital, Sion are facing a new kind of problem where the wind-shield of their cars were smashed and valuables looted inside the hospital premises.

In last 24-hours, four doctors have registered complaints with the dean of the hospital and questioned the hospital's security.

Dr Shripad Taklikar, assistant professor of microbiology department at Sion hospital, whose Maruti Ertiga was attacked on Thursday evening, said: "My car was parked near the dean's office. The incident happened between 6 and 7.30pm. The security guards are posted barely 100ft away from the parking area. Still, the windshield was smashed and my laptop bag was stolen. I lost my wallet too which had credit cards and money."

Two more cars were attacked in the morning and hospital sources say that the modus operandi in both incidents is similar. "We have registered an FIR and CCTV footages are being checked for information. We hope the security will also be beefed up," said Taklikar.

The state government on July 8 assured the Bombay High Court that in the coming seven days civic hospitals and the state run JJ Hospital will have extra police cover to ensure that doctors posted in those hospitals are not attacked by irate mobs of patients.

"Despite the court asking to take strict measures for security, the ground reality almost remains the same.. restriction on number of relatives is not being done. The number of security guards is hardly enough to tackle the immense load in hospitals and their quality of functioning is also highly questionable," said Dr Sagar Mundada, president of Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD).

A division bench of justices Abhay Oka and Amjad Sayed were told by the government that a total of 56 extra policemen and home guards will be posted, how many policemen should be carrying arms and ration of male and female would be decided by the Mumbai police commissioner. The deployment decision will be taken based on the security requirement of each hospital.
