Motorists and pedestrians using Jameshedji Tata Road in Churchgate will have to follow several traffic diversions for 30 months, owing to the construction of the underground Churchgate Metro station for the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro-3 corridor. This has left residents in surrounding areas complaining of inconvenience.

The northbound lane on Jamshedji Tata Road, going from Nariman Point to Churchgate station, is closed; and the southbound lane, going from Churchgate station to Nariman Point, will be functional with diversions. In the same lane, a section has been enclosed and marked for office-bound pedestrian traffic using the road for Nariman Point and Mantralaya.

According to officials from the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), contractors have assigned traffic wardens to the traffic department on all the locations, who will support the traffic police team in directing traffic.

A resident of Jamshedji Tata Road, Nina Verma, said, "Due to the diversions, there is bumper-to-bumper traffic on Dinshaw Vachha Road. Since the traffic going towards Churchgate station from Nariman Point is using the diversion via Pizza By The Bay, the traffic signal's halt on the route should be reduced and traffic cops should ensure that maximum vehicles pass during the green signal."

Meanwhile, MMRC stated that the plans have been approved by the traffic department. "As part of the diversion, Jamshedji Tata Road has been converted into a one-way road and the affected traffic has been diverted to Maharshi Karve Road and Marine Lines Road. The north-bound traffic has been closed for about two-and-a-half years, till the station's completion," said MMRC in reply to an email query. MMRC added, "There will be some local adjustments to facilitate stage construction. Initially, west side carriageway will be closed for piling and providing decking. After that, the south-bound traffic will be shifted to this decking and only thereafter the station work on east carriageway will be taken up by blocking that area."

& Analysis

Due to traffic diversions on certain stretches of the already narrow and congested roads, ambulances and fire fighting vehicles may find it difficult to reach their destinations on time in emergency situations.

Several motorists have been parking their vehicles by the Metro work barricades, further interfering with traffic movement.
