A Nigerian national landed in police net on Friday for duping a man, posing as a seller of a Mercedes Benz.

Thirty-two-year old Michael Yeneru Chekujeku alias Kenneth alias Sam posted an ad on OLX on December 8, 2014, putting a 2013 model Mercedes Benz for sale for Rs 16.5 lakh.

The ad caught the fancy of a Mercedes lover, and from the website he learnt that the ad was posted by one Raymond Dallas, working with the German embassy. Dallas' mobile number was also given in the ad.

"When the victim called Dallas, he gave him the number of one Bhavesh Jain, saying Jain was the mediator. The victim then called Jain and said that he wanted the car to be delivered in Kerala. Jain agreed, but sought a deposit of Rs 85,000 in an account number for getting an NOC from the Regional Transport Office," said an officer from the Cyber Crime police station.

Though he deposited the money, the car was not delivered. When the victim called Dallas again, the latter sought another Rs 2 lakh. At this point, the victim suspected foul play and lodged a police complaint.

"Investigations revealed that the account in which the money was deposited belonged to a person from Mizoram studying in Ahmednagar. The student's female friend, who was staying in Pune, was also questioned. She told the police she knew Michael and she has given him the account number for the Nigerian's use," said deputy commissioner of police (detection) Dhananjay Kulkarni.

Further probe revealed that the money was withdrawn from an ATM in Vashi.

"The police grilled the girl again and asked her to call the Nigerian and ask him to come near Centre One mall in Vashi. Micheal came, but he spotted the police team and started running. We chased him almost 2.5 km and caught him," said police constable Ganesh Ingavle.

The police have recovered two mobile phones, a passport and an ATM card from Michael.
