Seawoods resident Raja Mookherjee has decided to use hia martial arts and photography skills to good use by spreading awareness this International Women's Day about increasing crimes against women and giving them a chance to safeguard themselves. Mookherjee will be off to conduct an open hand combat workshop in Gurgaon and also to display his photographs that convey the abuse and assaults that women go through. Titled 'Protest Photography', it will include photographs of what every woman, from all walks of life suffers in an unsafe city.

Mookherjee, who is a second dan black belt in full contact form of karate and had represented India in a tournament in Tokyo in 2007, will conduct a four-day (Macrh 6-9) self-defence workshop along with his like-minded friend Asif Rahman, at the Women's Week celebration at Epicentre (a cultural centre) in Gurgaon. "Through the workshop we aim to give women, who cannot afford to enrol themselves in training centres or classes, a chance to get trained in basic self-defence as that is the need of the hour," says Mookherjee.

With an experience of training in martial arts for 30 years and knowledge of arts like Muay Thai and Krav Maga, the duo will teach participants techniques and guide them on how to respond while in a situation of threat.

Mookherjee, who is the secretary of Seawoods Cultural and Welfare Association (SWCWA), also plans to teach the techniques to female members of the association when he is back in the city.

Meanwhile, the photography exhibition will include photographs clicked by Mookherjee, related to crimes against women like rape, domestic violence, child sexual abuse, among others. "These photos will convey what yet needs to be done by the society, government and each one of us. It is a silent protest on behalf of scores of victims and hence the title," he says.

The motive is that instead of celebrating Women's Day by giving a gift or attending a party, people should acknowledge the threat women face and work towards finding a solution.
