Marine Drive residents are a worried lot while walking on streets and driving their vehicles. Recently, from 11 pm till wee hours, rash bikers have been riding their two wheelers to race on the empty streets causing sleepless nights for residents in the area. The police have taken action against 40 such bikers so far since January.

The residents have made repeated complaints to the Marine Drive police but have not got any respite from the nuisance. The residents alleged that the youth perform stunts on the streets and also hoot at pedestrians to scare them. The residents now plan to meet senior Mumbai police officers to chalk out a solution to their problem.

"The youth ride their bikes in groups and they often accelerate their bikes to generate noise from the silencers of their bikes which leads to disturbance when residents are sleeping," said a Marine Drive resident.

"The speed of the bikes are such that a minor mistake might lead to a major accident and would risk lives of the pedestrians and other motorists. We have also seen a group of girls riding rashly on the promenade," said the resident.

The Marine Drive Residents Action Group (MDRAG) have also raised this issue several times with the Mumbai police but their problems have fallen on deaf ears.

Manisha Haji, Joint Secretary, MDRAG, said, "We are fed up of complaining to the police now and then about the bike races which are dangerous. The youths on sports bikes create nuisance at nights. The noise of the bikes disturbs the sleep of children and senior citizens."

Shirish Shah, President, MDRAG, said, "The youths are not only risking their lives but also of the innocent people who are walking on the footpath and are driving their vehicles. The police should conduct surprise nakabandis and must crack their whip against such rowdies."

Vilas Gangawane, Senior Inspector, Marine Drive police station, "We have taken action against 40 persons so far and we make sure that the bike races do not take place on the streets. We are regularly conducting the nakabandis to curb drunk driving. If residents are facing any such problem we will ensure that their problems are resolved."
