Man to cycle across 25 states for raising mental health awareness

Sachin Gaonkar, a Dombivli resident and cyclist, is all set to bicycle across 25 states to raise public awareness about mental health. Gaonkar, a writer, director, and documentary film-maker will undertake the feat to mark the recently-celebrated 25th anniversary of a local NGO, the Institute for Psychological Health (IPH), with which he is associated.

Gaonkar would be cycling 14,000 km in 223 days and would use specially-made audio-visuals to illustrate the basics of mental health.

Sachin said, "I have ridden 8,500 km till date and have been to places like Goa, Kanyakumari, Arunachal Pradesh, Ladakh and Mizoram. But this ride would be different as I will be riding for a cause- to support humanity."

Gaonkar's epic ride will commence on 7th January 2015 and conclude on 15th August.

Speaking to dna about his preparations for the ride, Gaonkar said, "It just needs mental preparation and a little bicycling every day to build up endurance. Apart from these I have also made some audio video clips which I would show to the spectators on the way."

He said that he would reach out to schools and colleges so as to target the young crowd. He said that he would be be taking interactive sessions with youngsters. Along the journey, he would also shoot a documentary film on the general awareness, or the lack of it, about mental health.
