A 32-year-old man killed himself in Kandivli after trying to kill his alleged lover as a result of a love affair gone sour. The deceased, Jitendra Patil (32), who resided in Dahanukarwadi chawl in Kandivli, had an affair with a married woman, Nalini Mahadik (30), who lived in the same neighbourhood.

According to the police, the woman was trying to break away from the affair and Patil wasn't happy about it.

Balsingh Rajput, DCP of Zone 11, said: "On Friday, around 3pm, Patil came to Mahadik's house and the two had a tiff over their affair. He then took out a chopper and started stabbing her."

Patil hit her on the legs, hands and neck. Hearing her scream, a neighbour rushed to the spot. "After attacking her, Patil stabbed himself in the neck. The two, who were lying in a pool of blood, were rushed to Shatabdi hospital by the neighbours," added Rajput.

Patil was declared dead before admission, and Mahadik is undergoing treatment. She has multiple injuries on her body, but her condition is stable, said the police.

A case of attempt to murder has been registered by the Kandivli police. Further investigations are on.
