LT Marg police on Saturday arrested a diamond broker who allegedly duped a diamond trader of diamonds worth Rs 72.75 lakh. The arrested person has been identified as Rajeev Mehta (55), a resident of Gamdevi.

According to the police, complainant Bhavesh Shah (46), has a diamond cutting and polishing business at Opera House. In April, 2014, Mehta, along with a diamond broker, had met Shah and had done some successful dealing of diamonds. This helped Mehta to gain Shah's trust.

"In May, Mehta again met Shah with a lucrative business deal claiming that he has a few customers interested purchasing diamonds and are ready to pay good amounts. On September 5, as per Mehta's request, Shah handed over diamonds worth Rs 72.75 lakh to him with an assurance that he would return money within 60 days," said an officer from LT Marg police station.

He added that after the said time-frame got over, Shah asked Mehta for his money. "Mehta gave three cheques to Shah that got bounced due to insufficient balance. Later, Mehta started avoiding Shah by not receiving his calls. Later, Shah lodged a criminal breach of trust and cheating case against Mehta. On Saturday, Mehta was arrested in the case. He has similar cases registered with DB Marg and Gamdevi police stations," the officer said.
