To highlight the 'irregularities and corruption' in the recruitment process of the Dhule Municipal Corporation, a young man attempted to commit suicide in front of the entry gate at Mantralaya on Monday.

The man, identified as Baban Yashwant Zote, is a worker in the Dhule Municipal Corporation and has raised allegations of discrepancies during the recruitment process of the civic body in Dhule.

According to the police, the incident took place around 12 pm when Zote poured kerosene on his body and was about to set himself on fire. However, the police spotted him before he could do so. The police has taken him into custody.

According to the police, Zote had written a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on April 3, seeking a probe into the procedure of the Scheduled Caste (SC) recruitment drive held in 1989. In the letter, Zote had claimed that nepotism was prevalent in the recruitment procedure. He had alleged that "genuine" candidates were deprived of jobs while kins of corporators were recruited unscrupulously.

"We have made a diary entry of the matter and he will be sent back to his village," informed a senior police officer.

There have been a series of suicide attempts in and around Mantralaya over the past several months. This had drawn immense flak from the opposition parties, which have collectively labelled the state secretariat as a suicide point.

To avoid such frequent instances of suicides, the government had tightened the security at the Mantralaya. Additionally, it had taken a series of safety and precautionary measures.

The government had also beefed up the checking process for visitors in Mantralaya. Additionally, safety nets were installed inside the building so that people are unable to jump from the higher floors.
