In a bid to increase its reach, the Legal Metrology Department (LMD) of Maharashtra has made a profile on popular social networking site Facebook (FB). In addition to catering to the public's grievances, it will address issues within the department. After creating the account, many issues pertaining to promotions and requirements came to light, which the LMD's head is now addressing.

Senior inspector general of police and controller of LMD, Sanjay Pandey said: "Through our FB profile Mlmo Maharashtra, we have initiated an interaction with our inspectors, assistant controllers and deputy controllers. Through the account, we will discuss on how we should improve functioning of the department, as well as address needs and requirements of the department and force."

Pandey said that after creating the account, he came across several grievances of those working with the department. "Through this forum, people can bring to notice issues related to service matters, personal issues where I can be of help, professional suggestions, as well as legal metrology," he said.

He added that through the social media interaction, he learned that peons and lab assistants have not been promoted for years. "Also, the inspectors working with the LMD and Food & Drug Administration are recruited through the same process, but while FDA inspectors are class II officers, those working with LMD are given class III, which is unfair for them," said Pandey, adding: "I also got to know that there have been cases wherein a senior officer has been wrongly demoted as junior. All these issues are being catered to, and steps are being taken to correct them," he said.

Assistant controller and general secretary of All India Legal Metrology Officers Association, Lalit Harode said: "Through FB, we receive instructions from our superiors. I feel it is a good step not only for those working with the department, but also for the public. It is a medium where anyone can communicate their problems openly."

Mlmo Maharashtra has 229 people on its friend list, including officers working not only with Maharashtra LMD, but from other states as well.
