Meenakshi Jaiswal, Chairman of Maharashtra State Child Rights Protection Commission, was killed at her own residence in Kharghar in Navi Mumbai on Friday evening.

The police have arrested two persons and one is still on the run.

Was she staying alone?
Jaiswal, 46, used to stay alone in her flat at Vastu Vihar in Celebration Complex at Sector 17. Her husband, Santosh Jaiswal, is a magistrate in Malegoan. While her elder son Vidyasagar is a physician in Nashik, the younger son, Tejas, is studying MDS in Dhulia.

Who was the first witness?
Family physician Dr Santosh Jaiswal, says Vidyasagar, "Around 2.40 pm on Friday, I called up my mother from Nashik and we spoke for around 15 minutes. She sounded to be happy and everything was normal then," he said. "When I called her again in the evening, she did not pick up the phone. When I could not contact her even after repeated attempts, I called our family physician, Dr Santosh Jaiswal, and asked him to check if everything was alright," he said.

What did the doctor see?
"Dr Jaiswal visited our residence around 9.50 pm and he found that the door was slightly open and only one dim light was on in the hall. When he switched on the other lights, he spotted my mother's body lying in a pool of blood in the floor. He then informed the police about it," Vidyasagar said.

When did the police arrive?
Senior officers from Navi Mumbai police, including additional commissioner Fateh Singh Patil, reached the spot within a few minutes and took the body into their custody. "The deceased's throat was slit, and two fingers of the right hand were partially chopped off. She also had injury marks at various parts of her body," Patil told dna.

Who plotted the murder?
After talking to neighbours, the police learnt that one Vinayak Chauhan, a resident of Kharghar itself, used to visit Jaiswal off and on. He used to help her with household works and drive her car at times. "We immediately detained Chauhan from his residence. During interrogation, he confessed that he had guided two youth, who had entered the victim's flat to rob her of cash and jewellery," Patil said.

When did the two work at Jaiswal's flat?
"The two had worked as electricians at the victim's flat around two months ago and the Jaiswal owed some money to them. Probably that was why the victim opened the door when they went to her flat between 5 pm and 6pm on Friday. Chauhan was the mastermind of the crime, although he did not come to commit the crime," Patil said.

Who was Chauhan's accomplice?
The police later arrested one of the two youth. He has been identified as Maninder Singh Bajwa, 22, a native of Punjab. "We have booked both under Sections 302 and 397 of the Indian Penal Code. They will be produced before the judicial court on Sunday morning. We hope to arrest the third accused soon," said Suresh Mengade, deputy commissioner of police (crime).

Has the two got criminal records?
According to Mengade, Chuahan has criminal records. "The jewellery that the victim was wearing-- mangalsutra, bangles and rings – were missing. The family is still in shock, and, hence, they have not told us if some more cash and jewellery are missing from the house. We have not recovered any stolen goods from the suspects' possession till now," he said.

What are the police saying?
When asked if there were any other reasons for the murder, Patil said, "We don't think that professional rivalry with colleagues was the reason behind it. Our investigations are on."
