To ensure that the national flag is not scattered on roads and streets following Independence Day, Republic Day, and other important days, and is not disrespected in any other way, the state government has decided to form committees. Their main responsibility will be to collect the flags from roads and dispose them properly.

According to the Home department officials, after Independence Day, Republic Day, Maharashtra Day and sports events, small paper and plastic national flags are sold on a large scale. "By evening or next morning, these flags can be found scattered everywhere, which is disrespectful. The government is looking for public participation to stop this practice. Now committees will be formed at taluka and district level to stop the nuisance," said a Home department official.

He added that already the work of collection and disposal of abandoned flags was being done by many non-government and other organisations. Still, the government was considering a proper mechanism at the level of gram panchayat, municipal council and municipal corporation.

"The government has decided to set up committees that will collect soiled and torn flags abandoned on roads and dispose them following proper procedure. At the municipal corporation level, a three-member committee will be formed headed by the ward officer. It will have school principals and senior police inspector of the station concerned as its members," the official said.

The committee will take the help of students, youth, sports, women and non-governmental organisations, besides volunteers, for the work.
