Maharashtra government likely to approve new coastal zone regulations policy next week

The approval of this policy will help to approve the 480 residential and commercial pending proposals.

Maharashtra government is likely to approve the new Maharashtra Coastal Regulations Zone policy in next week's Cabinet meeting. The approval of this policy will help to approve the 480 residential and commercial pending proposals.

According to Maharashtra Environment Department; the coastal zone regulations policy remained lapsed for the last four months. "There were no policy so most of the residential and commercial proposals in Mumbai and it's suburban were not approved. Now, we are likely to get the policy in next week. We had assigned the Chennai based Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) orgnisations to study Maharashtra coast; development and prepare the policy. Once we get the policy it will be approved in the cabinet meeting," said environment secretary Anil Diggikar.

He said that this the previous policy was passed four months ago therefore many proposals were pending. "However; with the approval of new Maharashtra Coastal Regulations Zone policy, we will able to approve all sort of proposals . This policy will be applicable for Mumbai, it's suburban districts, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurgh. While policy for Thane and Palghar will come in next three four months. For them, another agency – National Centre for Earth Science will prepared the policy. That work is also in full swing," Diggikar added.

Sources in environment ministry said that this coastal policy is important to regular the development along the coast. "We have to protect the environment and allow the development as well. We have maintain the balanced de elopement. Due to some reasons; the policy got delayed. However; once the new policy is in place , things will work speedily," he added requested anonymity.

Manohar Shroff; vice president of Maharashtra Chambers of Housing Industry ; Navi Mumbai said that the delayed in coastal regulations policy cost huge amount to developers. " Last four months, our proposals were lying and gathering dust in environment department. We put a lot money in project and most of the money has been raised on high interest in market . We were forced to pay price without our fault. The rise in project cos also result into rise into property prices to recover our expenses. We are happy that finally government is coming with policy;" Shroff said.
