Hundreds of students in state who would otherwise have appeared for their HSC and SSC exams either in darkness or sweating owing to the fans at the exam centres not working due to load-shedding can now rejoice.

What's the good news?

The state government will by Friday ensure that generators are made available in exam centres to ensure uninterrupted power supply.
Government pleader Abhinandan Vangyani gave an undertaking to the court that by Friday the education officer and block officer concerned will provide the necessary generators/inverters at the 125 HSC and 321 SSC exam centres.

Why did the govt announce it?

A division bench of justices Abhay Oka and AK Menon had threatened on Monday to issue contempt notice to the principal secretary of education department for non-compliance of a September 2014 order
What has the court said?

The HC accepted the undertaking but directed the state board to verify the same on Saturday morning. The judges also told the board that if any centre does not have alternative arrangement, then it should be brought to the notice of the joint secretary of the school education department.
Taking a dig at the state government, which has announced several development plans, the court asked, "Isn't providing elementary facilities to students part of your development plan?" It added that these facilities are not like paying someone compensation or granting TDRs, but these are basic facilities which need to be given to students.

What petition was the HC hearing?

The observations were made during the hearing of a bunch of petitions, highlighting the non-implementation of a 2009 HC order, directing the state to provide uninterrupted power supply to exam centres. One of the petitions, filed by Navi Mumbai social worker Vishnu Gawli, alleged that many students have to appear for the exams in darkness.
Around 13.39 lakh students will be appearing for their HSC exams from Saturday in the state. Over 17 lakh students will appear for their SSC exams.
