A major hurdle in the proposed Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial near Chaityabhoomi in central Mumbai was removed on Saturday with the Centre handing over 12 acres (4.84 hectares) of Indu Mill land to the state government.

The transfer documents were handed over to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis by Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani and Union Minister of State for Social Justice Ramdas Athawale at the Vidhan Bhavan here.

Terming the transfer as a historic moment, Union Minister for Textile Smriti Irani said that she would come again to visit the memorial and praised the Fadnavis government for the achievement.

The CM said that the previous government could not acquire even an inch of land for the memorial. It was purely because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts that the land could be handed over to the state government.

Athavale said the Ambedkarites would see to it that the governments led by Modi and Fadnavis are continue to rule.

Athavale also credited Modi with the transfer of the National Textile Corporation (NTC) land (valued at Rs 3,600 crore) to the state government. He said that the state government has provided TDR (transferable development rights) to the NTC against the land and that Irani had assured that additional money received through sale of TDRs would be provided for the memorial.

Maharashtra Minister for Social Justice Rajkumar Badole said that it would be a three-storey memorial which would have 350-foot tall statue of Dr Ambedkar. The project cost was estimated to be Rs 500 crore.

Badole said that for the first time in India, cyclorama feature would be included in the memorial which would depict select incidents from Dr Ambedkar's life in an audio-visual format. The memorial would have museum, library, auditorium and a research centre. Badole said that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) would prepare a detailed project report on the memorial. The actual work would commence before April 14, 2017, which is birth anniversary of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, the minister added.
