The Maharashtra anti-terrorism squad (ATS) on Friday night seized a huge amount of explosives from a house in the Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh (MP) and arrested two people in the case. The police suspect the explosives were meant for Naxalites as the district is among the Naxal-affected areas.

The ATS said its Nagpur unit received specific information that a huge quantity of explosives are stored in the house of one Kaushal Madankar and that they could be used for unlawful activities in the days to come. As the house where the explosives were stored fell in the jurisdiction of the MP police, their assistance was sought.

Acting on the tip-off, a raid was conducted on Friday morning. ATS recovered 1,768 detonators, 612 sticks of 'Kelvex power 90 Class-2' explosive, an 840-foot detonating chord, an exploder and other related equipment.

The two arrested accused have been identified as Mukesh Sankhla, 30, and Rajmal Sankhla, 40. "We are interrogating the two. We are trying to find out from where did they procure the explosives and what were they planning to do with them," said an ATS officer privy to the investigation.

According to the ATS, they received information that the equipment was soon going to be used to carry out bomb blasts.

Chhindwara is a known Naxal-affected area and, hence, ATS also suspects the involvement of Naxalites and other anti-national forces in this case.

A case has been registered under the Indian Explosive Substance Act and further investigation is being done by the Chhindwara police. Officers of the Maharashtra ATS too are interrogating the accused.
