Lone women traveller helpline receives 400 messages in first three days

The messages send to the helpline are stored in a central server based in the police control room. The system can store up to one crore SMSs, and helps the police determine the cell tower location of the sender.

The newly-launched SMS-based helpline for women travelling alone by auto-rickshaws and taxis received 400 text messages in the first three days after its launch. However, the majority of them were 'test' messages sent by people curious to know if it was really operational, said police sources. The helpline requires women to provide the registration number of the vehicle they are travelling in.

The helpline—9969777888—was launched in the light of the Esther Anuhya murder case. The messages that women send to this number would be recorded in a central server based in the Mumbai police control room. The system also would help the police determine the cell tower location of the sender.

"On Saturday and Sunday, the helpline number recorded 250 text messages. However, none of them contained vehicle registration numbers of taxis or auto-rickshaws. They were simply sent by people to check if the helpline was actually functioning. On Monday, however, the number received around 150 text messages from all over the city, and all of these messages contained vehicle registration numbers of autos and taxis that the senders were travelling in," said deputy commissioner of police and Mumbai police's spokesperson Mahesh Patil.

"These details will be stored in the server and can be used to provide the police clues to the investigation in case any untoward incident occurs. Each such text message gets a response, advising the sender to call the 100 helpline in case they suspect that something is amiss. At least one crore such messages can be stored in the system," Patil added.
