Lok Sabha elections: 9 of 10 BJP-Shiv Sena candidates face criminal cases

Nine out of 10 candidates of the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance going to polls during the first phase on April 10 in Maharashtra face criminal cases, claims a comprehensive analysis of affidavits of the candidates done by Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR), a non-political group.

In case of the ruling Congress-NCP alliance, five out of 10 candidates have been found to have criminal cases.

The statistics, however, shows Congress-NCP candidates being ahead in terms of money power. The analysis of 200 affidavits of the candidates contesting in the first phase has revealed that the top three positions amongst the candidates with highest assets has two NCP-Congress leaders. Former Union minister and senior NCP leader Praful Patel is the richest candidate by a long margin with assets worth Rs195 crore, while Meghe Sagar Dattatraya of the Congress has assets worth Rs34 crore.

However, the party-wise analysis of assets reveal that all 10 candidates of the Congress-NCP combine have assets in crores. The figure is same for the saffron alliance. All the 10 candidates of the alliance have been found to be crorepatis. In case of Aam Admi Party (AAP), five out of 10 candidates have assets in crores.

Besides, the data has found seven candidates owing huge dues to government departments like electricity, water supply and telephone etc.

NCP candidate from Buldana, Ingle Krushanarao Ganpatrao has dues worth Rs33,000 to water supply department and Rs58,000 to the power department taking his total dues to Rs92,000.

The data speak for candidates contesting on the 10 seats of Vidarbha that will go to polls in the first phase of Maharashtra. The seats include Nagpur, Bhandara-Gondiya, Yavatmal-Washim, Amravati (SC), Ramtek (SC), Buldhana, Wardha, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli-Chimur and Akola.

The data has also found maximum number (64) of candidates to be in the age group of 41-50. Another 55 candidates are in the age group of 31-40 and 44 candidates have been found in the age group of 51-60 years.
