Patients afflicted with Parkinson's disease will assemble at Carter Road in Bandra (W) on Friday to bust myths about the ailments. The Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorder Society (PDMDS) is organizing an event, 'Lights for Parkinson's', where the amphitheater will be illuminated with numerous lamps to show support for the patients.

Parkinson's is an incurable progressive condition of the brain. It affects movement, speech and balance of an individual and causes incessant trembling of face and limbs. In persons above 60 years of age, population of which is increasingly ascending in India, Parkinson's affects one in hundred individuals. While in 2013, there were over 55 crore persons above sixty in India, in 2050 it is estimated to triple to 160 crores. Over 22% of Indian population will comprise of the elderly. "The symptoms of Parkinson's are very disabling and it makes it extremely difficult for people to perform tasks," said Dr Maria Baretto, CEO, Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorder Society (PDMDS).

PDMDS has twenty support groups in India including Mumbai, Nasik and Baroda where patients gather for physiotherapy, occupational therapy, yoga, creative therapies, cognitive rehabilitation, education and advice. "We provide services free of cost at various locations in the community. We provide free medications and assistive devices to people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. We also provide services at home for people who are home bound," said Dr Baretto.

Patients converge at the support group centres and indulge in making creative craft and painting. Others play instrumental music on casio or dance. Recently, the members participated enthusiastically in diwali celebrations. "We hope people turn out in large numbers to support our endeavours," said Dr Baretto.
