Why are Mumbaikars so ill? The answer may be hidden in the poor performance of our elected representatives. While the health scenario in Mumbai deteriorates with each passing year, the corporators attending the health committee meetings have no motivation to raise questions regarding the matter, even though it is their job.

According to the latest white paper released by NGO Praja Foundation, the city witnesses around 19 TB deaths in a single day. Over 1 lakh suffer from diarrhoea annually and the cases of cholera are up by seven times. Despite all this, four councillors – Geeta Gawli, Pramod Sawant, Sandhya Yadav and Tavaji Gorule – all members of the Public Health Committee, did not ask a single question regarding health in 2015-16.

The silent brigade was joined in by four other MLAs – Ramesh Latke, Ram Kadam, Trupti Sawant and Captain R Tamil Selvan. They also did not ask a single question related to health during the 2014 winter session and 2015 budget session.

The 227 councillors in the Assembly asked a total of 412 health-related questions between April 2015 and March 2016. But 115 of the lawmakers did not ask any question at all. On an average, every year since 2012, over 100 councillors did not ask a single question on health.

While Saeeda Khan, corporator from the L ward, asked maximum number of questions in 2015-16, it was Mumbadevi MLA Amin Patel, who has asked the maximum number of questions. "The funds allotted are not sufficient. A lot of money is needed and the government should spend maximum money on the health sector," Patel said.

Captain R Tamil Selvan, BJP MLA from Sion-Koliwada region, disputed the report and said, "I have spoken about health and sports-related issues several times. I have raised the issue of marijuana addiction among students thrice during the said period."
