It seems like the elected representatives in NMMC do not want to take any chances, especially after conviction of Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Lalu Prasad Yadav and Supreme Court’s verdict, which has banned convicted politicians from contesting polls.

They are worried that if they clear any proposal without getting a proper picture from the administration, they might face similar consequences and be held liable for their actions during the civic meeting.

The concern was evident during a discussion on the proposal for laying underground power cables from Mahape Junction to Eveready Circle.

NCP corporator Shivram Patil aggressively countered claims made by NMMC’s electric department in-charge GV Rao when the latter said the administration was working only after getting necessary clearances from general body in 2010.

The matter pertained to the status of underground cable work. Congress corporator Santosh Shetty, who raised the issue, wanted to know the status of work. It was then that Patil raised the matter of recovery of funds spent on underground cables from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL).

His contention was that NMMC was spending money on the work which should have been undertaken by the power utility firm. “We are spending money on work which should have been undertaken by MSEDCL and also paying them supervision charges at 15%. Above all, we will have to handover this property back to MSEDCL after wok is completed. Has NMMC signed an agreement with the power utility firm? And what are the steps taken by the administration to recover money which we are spending on behalf of the MSEDCL,” said Patil.

When Rao informed that there was no agreement between the MSEDCL and the corporation, but meetings were held at various levels for steps to be taken for recovery of money, Patil said, “This is how the administration works. They are now putting the entire blame on the corporators and the general body. All of us will become Lalu Prasad and will have to go jail due to serious lapses on part of the administration.”

Finally, Rao got the copy of proposal cleared by the general body and read it out to the members after which the standing committee members cleared the proposal.
