A labourer has been arrested by the Wadala TT police for allegedly raping a nine-year-old girl in her Sion home last week. The police have also arrested another person for sheltering the accused.

The arrested duo has been identified as Anwar Ail Barkat Ali and Abul Hassan.

According to the police, the minor was raped on the night of December 18, when she was alone at her home. At the time of the incident, her father was at work, while her mother had gone to her native place for a few days.

"There was some repair work going on at a house in the victim's locality and one of the workers, Anwar Ali, sneaked into the victim's residence and forced himself on her. He then left the spot and went on to inform his colleague Abul Hassan about what he had done," said an officer from Wadala TT police station.

Hassan, instead of reporting the matter to the police, asked Ali to come to his place at Zaveri Bazaar and stay there for a few days.

The victim told her father about what had happened after he returned home from work. The father approached the police immediately and a complaint was filed the next day.

After making inquiries in the area, the police zeroed in on the labourers as the suspects. Further inquiries led the police to Ali and Hassan.

"Ali was arrested on December 19, while Hassan was arrested on December 20. We have charged Ali with rape and sexual assault under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, while Hassan has been arrested on charges of harbouring an offender. The duo has been remanded to police custody till December 26," the officer said.
