“Be strong! You can be the Durga, when in trouble.” This message by a participant at the DNA self-defense camp board at Phoenix Marketcity mall, Kurla on Saturday, accurately explained the motto behind the camp which is to inculcate confidence in women that they can take down a man who by default is considered to be a stronger human being.

The second workshop of the DNA self-defense camp in association with the Super Fight League (SFL) saw tremendous enthusiasm and energy in the crowd. Sonali Yadav, a BPO professional and one of the participants, said, “I travel at odd hours. Helplines are okay but a practical training for me to handle the situation on my own before help arrives is important. Not all newspapers come ahead and give practical training, instead of just information.”

Yadav who came to attend the workshop all the way from Vashi, felt it was worth the commute as she will now feel confident travelling alone.

Priyanka Singh, an MBA student from Bhandup, said, “This was practical training. Not only did it happen in front of us, we also could participate and try it on our own. That was the best part.”

Looking at the confidence of the participants, Irfan Khan, a fighter from the SFL, who was amongst the trainers, said, “This is exactly how a woman is made able to fight back, by creating a positive attitude in her, that she can do it. What is taught here are basic, smart self-defense techniques but the confidence it has brought in them is an achievement which certifies that now they will not deter to kick a man.”

Self-defense techniques such as how and where to hit a man like kicking the groin, poking the eyes, attacking the nose and how to handle the situation if somebody attacks from behind were all taught at the workshop.
