Nearly a week after Shahzeeb Khan was arrested for allegedly pushing his 67-year-old uncle, about 100 family members, relatives and friends of Shahzeeb protested in his support on the building premises.

Nearly a week after Shahzeeb Khan, 20, was arrested for allegedly pushing his 67-year-old uncle Aziz-ul Rehman Khan, the father-in-law of Bollywood producer Sajid Nadiadwala, from the fourth floor of Saurabh Apartments in Versova, causing his death, nearly 100 family members, relatives and friends of Shahzeeb protested in his support on the building premises.

They insisted that Shahzeeb is innocent and his uncle, who was depressed, had committed suicide.

“We had arrested Shahzeeb following the statement given by Khan’s son Mohsin. When we had reached the hospital, Khan was in coma so, we could not record his statement,” said a police officer.

On October 9 morning, Khan went to his younger brother Khalid’s flat in another wing of the same building. The brothers were involved in a property dispute.

According to the police, Khan got into an argument with Shahzeeb, who in a fit of rage allegedly pushed him from the fourth floor staircase. Khan succumbed to injuries in the hospital. The police arrested Shahzeeb, but the family insists he  is innocent.

Shahzeeb’s younger brother, Mohammed Khizei, said: “That morning, I opened the door to collect the newspaper and saw my uncle standing in the verandah leading to the terrace. I invited him in, but he  said he was going to take a walk on the terrace and I closed the door,” said Khizei. “Shahzeeb, who came out of the bathroom, asked me who I was talking to. When I told him it was our uncle, he asked me why I had not let him inside.”

Shahzeeb’s aunt Asma Habib Khan, who was in the flat, claimed: “Shahzeeb  and I were talking to me when we heard a loud thud. My nephews rushed out and found Khan lying on the ground floor staircase.”

“Shahzeeb and his friends Huzefa and Javed Ansari, rushed Khan to Kokilaben Hospital in Ansari’s car. If he had pushed his uncle down the stairs, why would he take him to the hospital?” asked a relative.

Ansari said: “Khan was talking to his nephew and holding his hand in the car. Shahzeeb, too, was praying for his safety.”

“I reached the hospital minutes after the incident. Khan’s family reached 30 minutes later. Till then no one accused Shahzeeb of murder,” claimed Najma Shaikh, Khan’s sister.
