Members of the Rajput Karni Sena and other allied organisations on Friday made a bid to protest outside the office of Censor Board against the release of movie Padmavat, which was to earlier release as Padmavati. As the message spread, police made a bid to thwart the protest by having nakabandi on approach roads to Censor Board of Film Certification office on Pedder Road close to Jaslok Hospital. The Gamedevi police detained 136 protestors for unlawful assembly.
"We will not allow the movie to release. Changing name is not enough. We want the movie to be shown to us," said Santosh Singh Rathod one of the protesters who was being detained by police.
When asked by media about film being released after being seen by family members of royal families, censor board and other historians, and why should they protest without watching the movie, protesters said they were not satisfied and that it should first be shown to them.
"We want the film to be shown to us. Those who claim certain scenes are not in it, how can they say so without seeing the film? We are going by what Sanjay Leela Bhansali has shown in trailers and songs. Without watching the movie, we will not believe in anyone. We believe in our government but not Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He has again and again played around with Rajputs," Sumita Suman Singh from Rajputana Seva Sangh.
"Mere changing of name and removing some scenes does not make a difference. They have played with the history and we should be allowed to see the film first. We will not allow the film to be released," said Kripal Singh Chandra, who had come from Gujarat to protest.
Among those who protested and were taken away by police one by one and in groups as they showed up, were people from Rajasthan, Gujarat and also from Mumbai. Some even got stick and national flag to to be waived at the protest meet. A number of protestors were stopped in Nakabandi and picked up from Haji Ali where they had gathered. "This particular person said that he had come for darshan at Mahalaskhsmi temple," said an officer of one protester before taking him away in a police van.
Security guards posted at the gate of the censor board said that office was shut for the day and did not allow anyone to enter. Calls to censor board office did not get any response. Police said that a total of 136 protesters were detained who tried to protest outside censor board.
Netaji Bhopale, Senior Inspector, Gamdevi police station, said, "We have arrested 136 persons for unlawful assembly of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of the Mumbai Police Act. The accused were protesting despite the orders to not protest."
