The NM Joshi Marg police probing the Kamala Mills fire case, in which 14 patrons died, is on the lookout for the architect of the compound. The police have registered a case against Bharat Gandhi, who designed Kamala Mills Compound and is based in Ahmedabad.

According to the police, the architect did not submit the design plans of the two pubs- Mojo Bistro and 1Above- to the BMC. The police alleged that Gandhi is responsible for the mishap as all the documentation and permissions were acquired by him and he is absconding since BMC chief Ajoy Mehta submitted the fire report to CM Devendra Fadanavis.

"We have added the name of Gandhi in the FIR and have booked him for culpable homicide. He was called for questioning but he has not turned up yet. A team has been dispatched to arrest him," said a police officer who is privy to the investigation.

Meanwhile, in a significant development in the Kamala Mills fire case, after fire brigade report, the police probe also points out that the fire started at Mojo's bistro.

According to the police, to get the exact sequence of events, they recorded the statements of staffers working at Mojo's who were present on the fateful day. After the statements of the staffers, the police learned that the staffers would burn the coal in a Segdi where the coal used to burn and later taken on tables to serve Hookah.

The police source said, "on December 29 the coal Segdi was kept at a corner of the pub and it had got overheated. Due to the air wind, the flying embers of coal Segdi came in contact with the flammable sheets which were used to cover the roof and then the fire started."

"The fire caught so quickly due to wind blow that we did not get time to douse it and hence we all informed the customers as well as the staffers to leave the premises. The sheets were closed to the place where the burning coals were stored and the coal on that day got overheated which caused the fire," an eyewitness and staffer of Mojo told the police.
