Culpable homicide charges should be framed against Brihnmumbai Municipal Corporation chief Ajoy Mehta, who was responsible for the death of 14 people in the Kamala Mills fire incident, alleged Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, Leader of Opposition, Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and Congress MLA on Tuesday.
Patil, along with Mumbai Congress president Sanjay Nirupam and other Mumbai Congress leaders met Governor Vidyasagar Rao on Tuesday, demanding suspension of Mehta, and action under IPC section 302 (culpable homicide).
"Mojo Bistro and 1Above restaurants blatantly flouted the prescribed norms. They illegally ran hookah parlors. These violations are even recorded in the Mumbai Fire Brigade's probe report. BMC officials are solely responsible for Kamala Mills fire incident because they could not take actions against these restaurants despite knowing about the violations," Patil said.
He also said that incidents such as the Kamala Mills fire should be probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). "In Mumbai, illegal constructions have been mushrooming at every nook and corner. Corrupt and inefficient BMC officials are responsible for the frequent fires and building collapses that we are witnessing. Innocent people are losing their lives. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis made the wrong move by giving the Kamala Mill Fire incident probe responsibility to BMC chief. If he himself is involved, then how we can expect a fair and impartial probe from him. Hence, CBI should be asked to probe this incident," Patil said.
