An unidentified person allegedly killed a 65-year-old man at Kalyan and attacked his 58-year-old wife with a sharp weapon, leaving the woman severely injured.

Lahu Beturkar, a resident of Beturkarpada in Kalyan West, was found in pool of blood and his wife Jayabai, who bleeding profusely, screaming for help.

They were both rushed to a nearby hospital where her husband was declared dead, The woman is undergoing treatment for injuries.

The Bazarpeth police have not yet established the identity of the attacker and motive behind the attack. The woman is in critical condition and is admitted at Vedh hospital in Kongaon.

"The couple were asleep when they were attacked. The attacker weilding a koyta (sickle) attacked the duo, killed the man and injuredthe woman severely on her throat and chest," said a Bazarpeth police officer.

A case, under section 302(murder) and 307(attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of the Arms Act, has been registered.

"We are investigating if the man had a rivalry or personal enmity. We have not made any arrests yet," said Vijay Bhise, investigation officer, Bazarpeth police station

"We are waiting for his wife to gain consciousness as she could shed some light on the motive behind the attack," said Bhise.
