The Centre has increased petrol and diesel prices for the second time in the past fortnight. Opposing this hike, members of the Congress in Kalyan staged a protest by bringing horse-drawn carriages and riding cycles on the roads. The demonstration brought traffic movement to a standstill, though many onlookers and locals supported the protest.

Chaitanya Kotian, a local resident, said: "If prices of petrol, diesel and other commodities continue to increase like this, then we will have to resort to commute via cycles and horse carriages. It is essential that the government understand that the cost of living has been increasing, and they should take measures to ensure we lead a comfortable life."

On Friday, an increase in petrol and diesel prices was announced – Rs3.13 for petrol and Rs2.71 for diesel. This prompted Congress party workers to take to the streets between Sajanand Chowk to Tehsil office.

Over the course of the rally, they also met tehsildar Abhijit Deshmukh and requested him to contact the Centre and withdraw the hike. During the procession, they made a symbolic move by pushing bikes – to show how they are unable to afford petrol or diesel now.

One of the party workers made his ire at the BJP government clear by saying: "Without any valid reason, there has been a hike in rates, but during the Manmohan Singh government, they declared a hike only when there was any increase in the international market. This is not the case right now, yet the Modi government has increased prices within 15 days."

MLAs Sanjay Dutt, Brij Kishore Dutt, Avinash Tiwari, Rakesh Mutha, Shakeel Khan, Munna Tiwari and a few other party workers were part of the protest. They have submitted a written complaint at the tehsildar's office.
