Kala Ghoda Arts Festival: Nine days of celebrating creativity and innovation begins on February 1

Yes, the annual Kala Ghoda Festival is back. Celebrating art, dance, literature, music and theatre; the festival has become an integral part of Mumbai. Every year, around this time Kala Ghoda suddenly comes alive with small stalls, vendors, art installations, tattoo artists and  creative innovations. The vibrancy and the varied culture is palpable. The festival attracts enthusiasts from all across the country and if you look at the festival at large, it brings together all the diverse cultures that India offers on a plate.

The Festival has grown exponentially, and is hugely successful, drawing over 150,000 people from all over the city to 350 events over 9 days. Funds raised from the festival go towards the restoration and upkeep of the area. 

This year, the festival will be held between February 1 and February 9. Here's a lowdown of Kala Ghoda Festival has to offer this year. 

Literature at Kala Ghoda - Why don't you write me
They say literature feeds the soul's curiosity and inspires the mind to go out on new adventures. This year at The Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, novelists and poets, columnists and non-fiction writers, people are helping shape the world of tomorrow. These events are scheduled at David Sasoon Library, Arbour and Tarq.

Heritage walks at Kala Ghoda - Momentum
Walk together and discover more about the city that baffles, overwhelms and inspires so many. Come and explore the idea of the city through its Heritage, standing tall, embracing the change and welcoming the future. The thematic for the 2013 festival is  'CHANGESCAPE'.  Participants are welcome on first come - first serve basis and a token for the walks can be collected from the help desk.

Visual Arts at Kala Ghoda - Moving images 
This year at The Kala Ghoda Arts Festival let the Visual Art surprise, shock, entice and compel you.The thematic for the 2014 festival is ‘MOVING IMAGES’ Diverse group of artists’ find a space for their talents and thoughts to manifest a form at the festival through interactive installations and photography exhibits at Rampart Row, Parking Lot, CSMVS Gardens, David Sasoon Library, Art Entrance and Artists' Centre.

Street at Kala Ghoda - The Road Show
This year at Kala Ghoda enjoy the gentle sounds and stories preserved and through many generations. Adorned on either side by craftsmen, artisans organized by our own team; and NGOs under Concern India Foundation, selling their wares from the famous Kala Ghoda stalls, the street will yet again become a living and thriving celebration of different folks and different strokes. There will be food stalls too from the restaurants in the area.The street will change its mood everyday with vibrant performances by folk dancers, musicians and street plays from all over the country. Experience the amazing folk dance forms, sounds of traditional instruments and spectacular costumes as puppeteers, street artists and folk dancers entertain you. They transport us back to traditional times and simpler lives.  Our theme for this section is 'THE ROAD SHOW’ and as the name suggests, we look forward to seeing you … on the street at Rampart Row.

Children at Kala Ghoda - Mini momentum
At Kala Ghoda Arts Festival the little people have special precedence- a space where they can learn, laugh, dance and play. Participate in workshops and shows that are specially designed to interest curious and cheerful minds. There are no registrations and the children are welcome on first come - first serve basis. The thematic for the 2014 festival is 'MINI MOMENTUM’. The workshops are all at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maha Vastu Sangrahalaya Gardens. Kitab Khana is where several children's literature workshops will be hosted.

Food at Kala Ghoda - Food train
The Kala Ghoda Food section brings you a culinary smorgasbord of food, a food train that calls in at different stations and allows their chefs to teach you how they make their signature dishes. Learn to create restaurant quality food with ease and comfort. This year's focus is on the increasing presence of the home-cook, the do it yourself caterer, and the growing popularity of these self-motivated individuals.  Workshops will also be conducted by some of Mumbai's master chefs at Westside and at Gateway Rooms. Participants are welcome on first come - first serve basis.

Theatre at Kala Ghoda - Rang Baraat
Watch all kinds of theatre…. tragedy, comic humour. Veterans and amateur directors put together plays across many genres and languages.Our thematic for the 2014 festival is ‘RANG BARAAT’.Theatre venues are at Horniman Circle Garden, Max Mueller Bhavan and Artists' Centre.

Cinema at Kala Ghoda - Flash Forward 
This year cinema from different genres and timelines can be seen at four beautiful venues - Coomaraswamy Hall, Max Mueller Bhavan, BNHS, Gallery Beyond.

Dance at Kala Ghoda - Gati
Delight yourself in the visual beauty of several classical and contemporary forms. India's most celebrated dance groups get you on your feet.The thematic for the 2014 festival is 'GATI’. Watch over 35 dance groups interpret the theme in the dance form of their choice at Cross Maidan.

Workshops at Kala Ghoda - Theme: Acceleration
Learn more about arts, lifestyle, photography, dance, cinema, theatre, music and food with workshops at the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival. Masters from respective fields come together, to conduct a variety of workshops every day through the course of the festival and are for all ages, mostly adults. Conducted at Artisans’, Artists' Centre and Gallery ICIA, the workshops require no registrations, and participants are welcome on first come and first serve basis. 

Music at Kala Ghoda - Architecture and Urban extension - Move Mumbai
The new Urban Design and Architecture section offers an artistic and yet analytic approach to this year’s festival theme ‘Momentum’. The program provides both a broad, humanistic perspective on the physical aspects of our city, and exposure to future architects, city planners, public administrators, and writers on urban problems and solutions.
