Resident doctors at Sir JJ Hospital, Byculla have decided to continue their strike, which began on Sunday to get across their demands for an enhanced security system. The strike comes following an attack on two resident doctors and a nursing staff by a bunch of family members of a patient who died in the hospital on Saturday.
According to the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), the security system which was assured to medicos a year ago is to be seen only on papers so far and no measures have been implemented.
Speaking about the strike, Dr Sarang Donakar, chief of MARD, who works in JJ Hospital, said, "We will call off the strike only when we see the implementation of security system on the ground. Unless our demand is fulfilled, we won't work."
According to the hospital authority, the strike did not affect the hospital's service. Dr Sanjay Surase, medical superintendent, said, "On Sundays, we don't keep any surgeries unless there is an emergency. There were no emergency surgery cases due to which everything was functioning smoothly."
Resident doctors from other public hospitals in the city have also supported the strike. Alok Singh, president, MARD, KEM Hospital, said, "After the attack on doctors last year, we had demanded security board which includes students representative, dean, and security in-charge to review the safety measures once a month. But none of the public hospitals in the state have implemented the review meeting system."
