JJ Hospital's resident doctors call off strike after being promised 54 alarm bells, 28 security guards

The medical authority has also assured them of installing 54 alarm systems in the hospital within two months.

After four days, the resident doctors of JJ Hospital finally called off their strike on Tuesday. The resident doctors have been assured protection of 28 security guards from Wednesday. The medical authority has also assured them of installing 54 alarm systems in the hospital within two months.

Dr Pravin Shingare, Head, Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), said, "After the first meeting with the resident doctors, we had consulted technical experts to place alarm bells in the hospital. Fifty four alarm systems will be installed at 73 spots. Earlier, alarm systems were only available in the casualty ward."

The resident doctors had asked for 282 security guards on the ground in the hospital. The authority has agreed to provide additional 28 guards on an immediate basis. The hospital already has 170 security guards.

Shingare said, "Out of the 28 guards, we will need an additional budget for 10 guards. The other guards will be hired for posts lying vacant at the hospital."

Speaking about calling off the strike, Dr Amol Hekare, spokesperson of Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), said, "The medical authority has agreed to give extra guards, so we called off the strike and will start working again. They have also assured us that a pass system — allowing a maximum of two relatives per patient to visit."

The resident doctors held meetings with the minister of medical education and higher medical authority in the past four days. Girish Mahajan, medical education minister, said, "They also came up with few issues such as lack of emergency medicines and accommodation problems, which we have promised to address soon."

He added, "The resident doctors will be trained on communication and counselling, which will help them build a better rapport with the patients and their relatives."
