The proposed memorial for warrior-king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj or Shiv Smarak in the Arabian Sea may get access from Marine Drive with the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) planning to construct a jetty at the NCPA in Nariman Point.

Vikram Kumar, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MMB, said they were planning to construct a jetty near the NCPA to provide access to the proposed memorial.

Once constructed, this jetty can also be used to operationalise water transport routes to other locations.

"We will seek permission from the state government and send a proposal seeking funds," he added. However, the construction work will take time to begin due to the permissions involved, including environment clearances.

Kumar said the jetty at the NCPA will be built on stilts and may cost around Rs 200 to 250 crore. He added that the MMB was also looking at another site at the Radio Club for building a jetty. However, this area comes under the jurisdiction of the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT).

MMB sources said they had around 40,000 sq m land plot near the NCPA, including the area which was submerged. The jetty will provide access to the statue site in around 10 minutes.

The Shivaji Maharaj memorial, which has a 36-month completion period, will come upon a 15.96 hectare rocky basalt outcrop in the Arabian Sea 1.2 km south west of Raj Bhawan and once completed, will be the world's tallest statue at 212 meter.

On March 1, the state government awarded the letter of acceptance (LOA) to engineering major L&T for Rs 2,500 crore on an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) model.

Actual construction is expected to begin after monsoons, said officials.

The statue will be made of bronze alloy to withstand the saline marine environment, corrosion and wind pressure. An area of around 10 hectare will be developed on the rock for the memorial and facilities in two phases.

The state wants the statue to rise to 212 meters so that it is 2 meter taller than the Spring Temple Buddha in Henan, China, which is the world's tallest statue. The hill on which the statue of Vairocana Buddha is built was reshaped to increase its height to 208 meter.

The memorial will have amenities like landscaped gardens, two jetties, library, helipad, medical facilities, amphitheater, and museum.
