In a precursor to having Wi-Fi connectivity about 40,000 feet above the ground in domestic flights in India, Jet airways on Monday announced introduction of an in-flight entertainment streaming service using Wi-Fi.

The development seems significant, as passengers want to remain connected for work or with family /friends over the internet.

At present Wi-Fi service is available only in selected International flights. Few other airlines, including Air India, Indigo, Vistara, AirAsia, Spicejet etc. too have shown interest for installing Wi-Fi services inside their flights. Few of these airlines had approached the civil aviation ministry early last year, seeking an approval for the same.

According to a statement released by Jet airways, that subject to regulatory approvals, the airlines will also have full broadband satellite connectivity in the future, for internet surfing, e-mail, social media, connecting flight information, instant messaging, real time travel services and destination deals.

The streaming service will be introduced on the Boeing 737 starting from the second quarter of 2016. Gaurang Shetty, senior vice president – commercial, Jet Airways, said: "This best-in-class, customer-focused initiative will provide superior entertainment and communication options to guests and we are confident that it will set new benchmarks by delivering high quality, global entertainment content to guests' personal devices."

However, many passengers have complained of not having a good experience with Wi-Fi services on board. The reason for it is apparent it being too expensive and slow as a snail; often breaking down intermittently. Jet airways did not specify the charges which it will charge the passengers for using the services.

On January 22, railway ministry had launched a free high-speed public Wi-Fi service in collaboration with Google at Mumbai Central railway station making it first such project in the country. The ministry plans to bring over 100 busiest railway stations under the free Wi-Fi services by the end of the year.
