The body of a man, aged about 43, that was found on the banks of Vasai creek last week, has not been identified yet, and the police say that a post-mortem has revealed he was strangled to death.
The body was found near Pachubunder village, not far from Vasai port, on Wednesday.
The Vasai police said the body was clad in jeans and had shoes on his feet. "It had not decomposed very much as it was in salt water," said a police official.
He said that an 'Om' tattooed on the left wrist and the name 'Sahana' on the left thumb may help to identify the man.
They suspect that the man was murdered and that his body was dumped in the creek. The police have registered a case under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code.
"We are looking through missing person reports that may have been filed at nearby Navghar and Bhayander police stations," the official said.
