Following uproar over the abrupt transfer of IPS officer Sanjay Pandey to Protection of Atrocities against Women (P&AW) department in Pune as additional director general (ADG), the state home department on April 16 passed an order stating that Pandey would to continue to work with the weights & measures department. The post has been upgraded from inspector general (IG) to ADG to accommodate Pandey.

What does the order state?
The order signed by additional chief secretary of home department KP Bakshi states, "Taking view of the administrative urgency, the post of controller of weights & measures has been upgraded to the rank of ADGP and Pandey has been appointed at the said post. The post of P&AW, in consultation with DGP Sanjeev Dayal, will be handed over to some other officer."

Why has Pandey been brought in?
While the food and civil supplies ministry, along with the Food and Drugs Administration and weights & measures department, is facing rampant corruption across the state, minister Girish Bapat has decided to bring in Pandey to head the state-wide vigilance team for all his departments.

According to sources, even chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who heads the Home department, has given his nod for this appointment. It is likely that Pandey will be given the separate charge of handling state-wide action against malpractices related to these departments.

Even though Bapat said no final decision has been taken, sources told dna that Pandey will be made in-charge of the entire vigilance aspect of the department aimed at curbing and preventing scams and irregularities within Bapat's departments.

What is minister Bapat's aim?
Sources revealed that after Bapat was made the food and civil supplies minister, he has been contemplating stringent action against all those involved in scams in his departments. He refers to them as foodgrain mafias or drug mafias and has expressed his determination of taking strong measures against all ill-practices.

About the IPS officer
